Today’s Aikidoka cannot recognize “big guy” technique, technique that functions only through a choreographed Uke and/or through a lighter, weaker Uke. This kind of Aikido is so ubiquitous, so common among the higher ranks, that it has come to be seen as effective, and as martial, and for many people it has become what is to be emulated. In fact, “big guy” technique is actually at the apex of what is ineffective and of what can never be martial. It functions only within arenas where no martial training needed
