Ne-Waza: Tactical Positioning Drill #1

This beginner drill develops several key components central to cultivating both an unfettered mind and skill at Ne-Waza.  At this level, the drill centers mostly on the following three positions: Mount, Side-Control, and the Closed-Guard.  In the drill, which begins with a prescribed takedown, practitioners, under spontaneous conditions, are seeking to climb up the scale of tactical positions.  For the sake of early learning curves, and for the purposes of focusing in upon the significance of positioning, practitioners are semi-restricted from executing submissions and/or strikes.  Submissions and/or strikes, both realized and simulated, are used here only to remind practitioners that they should not seek to take advantage of the drill’s constructs but to keep in mind later more sophisticated training environments.  This training works to help develop a practitioner’s intuitive understanding of the significance of gaining a tactical advantage through positioning.  It also assists with the development of a practical sense concerning the dynamics of balance.  Finally, following the introduction of relative forms, such training also helps the practitioner to better grasp the “energy print” that supports every technique and that gives practical significance to details.  With such an understanding, a practitioner is able to generate a live and fluid movement that remains consistent with good form.
